After years of uncertainty and loss, Sarah and Damien’s family discovered stability, healing and hope for the future through their very first holiday.
For years, Sarah and Damien’s lives were marked by instability. They were forced to move home after home, often with no notice, and even spent months living in a van with their children.
Despite every setback, Sarah remained determined to find safety and stability for her family. Eventually, with the help of Uniting, they were given the keys to a secure home. It was a turning point after years of uncertainty.
But the true transformation came when they were nominated for their first-ever holiday with the Magical Getaway Foundation.
The family headed to Phillip Island and, for the first time in years, the weight of survival was lifted.
They did not have to worry about rent, food, or what tomorrow might bring. Instead, they played mini golf, explored mazes, swam together, and watched in wonder as the fairy penguins returned from the sea at dusk.
For Sarah and Damien, the most powerful part of the holiday was watching their children change before their eyes.
Normally competitive and quick to argue, the siblings began working together, helping one another, and enjoying each other’s company. That shift in behaviour continued when they returned home, easing stress for the whole family.
Sarah explained that the holiday gave them more than just rest. It gave them a vision of what life could be like, calmer, connected and full of joy. It renewed their sense of hope and strengthened them as a unit.
“It was a blessing we will never forget. We came home with a stronger bond, a lighter heart, and the belief that our future can be different.”
Today, Sarah reflects not only on the impact the holiday had on her family but also on her own resilience. She now shares her strength and compassion with others, mentoring families who are beginning their own journey of healing through holidays.
